The first route a hiker should take is from Portovenere, a path which cuts in two the coastal side from the internal zone, leading visitors all the way to Levanto. While it measures over 40 kilometers in length and it is recommended only to experienced mountain hikers, this trail is ideal when it comes to seeing not only Cinque Terre (this route meanders through all five villages), but also the surrounding areas. However, if tourists prefer otherwise, they could opt for a smaller part of the route, which is actually a stretch that covers only the five villages. This later Cinque Terre route is only 20 kilometers long, rising up to 516 meters above the sea level.
